The area at a glance
This part of Oldham County covers everything north of I-71, from the interstate up to the Ohio River. Oldham County sits just northeast of Louisville, and it was formed in 1823. The main places here are downtown La Grange and its north side, and Goshen along US 42. The small river town of Westport and the Oldham County side of Prospect are here too. Below is a short section on La Grange and on Goshen.
La Grange
Where it is
La Grange is the county seat, and it became the seat in 1827, when the county offices moved from Westport. It is named for the French estate of the Marquis de Lafayette, who visited the area in 1824, and it became a city in 1840. La Grange is split between two areas. Downtown and the north side are in this area, and the south side is in the area south of I-71.
Getting around
I-71 runs through La Grange just south of downtown, with exits at KY 393 and KY 53, and it connects straight to downtown Louisville. Freight trains run down the middle of Main Street, in both directions.
Shopping and food
Downtown La Grange has small shops, places to eat, and art galleries, plus the La Grange Railroad Museum. The Farmers and Artisan Market runs from mid-May through late October. For groceries, a Kroger and a Walmart Supercenter sit near the I-71 exit at KY 53.
Parks and outdoors
Springs Park downtown opened in 2022 and has the city’s splash pad, and Wilborn Park has two fishing lakes. Wendell Moore Park on KY 393 covers 107 acres, with the county aquatic center, disc golf, and a fishing lake. Morgan Conservation Park on KY 524 has more than 4 miles of hiking trails and small waterfalls.
The homes
Downtown has older homes, some built around 1900. Neighborhoods like Pear Orchard and Greenwood Common were mostly built from the 1970s through the 1990s, on lots of about a fifth of an acre. Farther north, homes sit on lots of an acre or more, and some new homes are still going up.
Goshen
Where it is
Goshen is a small city in the northwest corner of Oldham County, along the Ohio River northeast of Louisville. It was founded in 1849 and became a city in 1990. For years, it was home to Land O’ Goshen, a horse and sheep farm owned by William Burke Belknap.
Getting around
US 42 is the main road, and it runs southwest through Prospect into Louisville. KY 1793 runs north and south through the area.
Shopping and food
There are small shops and a few restaurants along US 42. For groceries, the Kroger at Prospect Village Shopping Center is a short drive southwest on US 42.
Parks and outdoors
Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve on Harmony Landing Road has more than 9 miles of wooded trails, plus springs, small waterfalls, and a frog pond.
The homes
Many homes are in subdivisions built from the late 1970s through the 1990s, like Harmony Landing, Goshen Hills, and Settlers Point, on lots of about half an acre to an acre. Newer neighborhoods like Longwood and Pond Creek have homes from the 2010s on, and new homes are still being built. Some homes sit on five acres or more.
